Long story short is this german dude wanted to get cautionary kids tales but didn't like what was available so he started writing his own. Only they ended up being really gruesome (very edward gorey). For instance, shockheaded peter was unkempt and dirty and the moral of his story was that if you don't groom yourself, your parents will bury you alive under the house.

In the tale of the thumsucker, the scissorman will sneak in and cut them off.
