I was the most struck by this 1940s photo of Rosslyn, with Georgetown and the Key Bridge in the background. (Compare with the current aerial photo in Google Maps.) Noticeably absent are today's high-rises and highways, including the Whitehurst Freeway across the river in DC.

And... are those smokestacks in Georgetown??"
