Be Careful Who You Pretend to Be.
I came across this great episode of This American Life. The first and third 'acts' describe a living history program at Conner Prairie in Chicago where the participants play a runaway slave. The first part is from the perspective of one of the 'historic interpreters' who plays a slave owner in this program. The second part takes you through the program as a participant.
The participants, who play escaped slaves, are psychologically abused in an attempt to impart some understanding of slave life.
The museum I once worked at in Ohio did a similar program.
It's a really good listen.
